Publisher Description
In a rough seaside village ruled by swaggering sailor John Kulrek and his cringing accomplice Lie-lip Canool, fear and violence are the law. When Kulrek seduces and ruins a young woman from Moll Farrell's household, the girl is found dead on the shore, and the old woman's fierce curse rises against him with the force of the sea itself. Her vigil turns the village colder and stranger, as if nature has joined her in demanding vengeance. When Canool returns alone, evasive and haunted, the mood deepens into dread. Fog closes over the bay, strange oars sound in the mist, and two boys are drawn into a supernatural pursuit across dark water. They follow a phantom galley to an ancient, decaying ship rowed by skeletons and haunted by a dead man stabbed through the back. The apparition vanishes in a crash near shore, and Kulrek's body is washed up exactly as Moll foretold. In the end, Canool confesses that he murdered Kulrek and cast him into the sea, only to be pursued by the dead man and the curse that would not let him rest.
