Robert Watt was a political radical. He was convicted and hanged for his involvement in a far-fetched revolutionary plot to establish Scotland as an independent country. The jury recommended mercy, but the court sentenced Watt to be was hanged and beheaded. This sentence reflected the courts' opinion of severity of Watt's crime.
