The book tells the story of Lithuanian native Jurgis Rudkus and his young wife Ona Lukoszaite's journey to Chicago with their extended family in pursuit of a better life. Despite this, the couple's and their family's lives is nearly impossible because of dishonest landlords and terrible working circumstances, which compel them to face catastrophe after catastrophe. Winston Churchill was an admirer of the book, but because of its socialist content, it was especially targeted for destruction during the Nazi book burning campaigns in the 1930s. The book's influence on the founding of the Bureau of Chemistry led to the subsequent creation of the Food and Drug Administration.

AUTHOR
Prolific American author and social activist Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) is well-known for his political involvement and social protest writings. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 20, 1878, and died in Bound Brook, New Jersey, on November 25, 1968, at the age of 90. The novel "The Jungle" (1906), which exposes the horrifying and unhygienic conditions in the meatpacking business, is Sinclair's most well-known creation. It is regarded as a classic among realistic proletarian works and was crucial to the Pure Food and Drug Act's passing.
