The Orphaned Earth

Randy de la Serna is a blacksmith apprentice from the thawing Antarctica, and he's out of time. His people in McMurdo are dying as the prehistoric "bird plague" rots their lungs. While looking for a cure, he runs into a survivor from a crashed Martian spaceship and finds himself caught in the crosshairs of an interplanetary war between a god-like AI and the scouts from Mars.
