A Californio family loses its land to squatters and the railroad after the American conquest, and the courts are no help. Ruiz de Burton was a Californio herself and this is one of the first novels in English written from the conquered side of that war. This edition is bound with 55 plates of paintings by Edvard Munch, George Inness, Robert Seldon Duncanson and others, dated 1835–1909.
