Publisher Description

Lt.-Col. Stewart was selected as aide de camp to General Gordon for his difficult but strategically vital mission to Sudan in January 1884. Within hours of his appointment he was travelling from London to Khartoum, where he would play an important role in the defence of the city against the Mahdi;. Stewart met his death in September 1884, along with almost all the remaining European inhabitants of Khartoum, as he sailed north to appeal to British officials for help. During his time in Sudan, he kept a detailed journal containing fascinating insights into the developing crisis. This volume presents surviving parts of the journal, together with private letters and notes that add much colour. Edited with an introduction by Dr Fergus Nicoll, journalist and historian, author of The Mahdi of Sudan and the Death of General Gordon, and board member of the Sudan Studies Society of the UK.
