A Short History of Spain
Publisher Description
At the time of the sacking of Rome, this Gothic prince fell in love with Placidia, the sister of the Emperor Honorius; and after the fashion of his people, carried her away as his captive; not an unwilling one, we suspect, for we learn of her great devotion to her brave, strong wooer, with blond hair and blue eyes. Ataulf took his fair prize to the city of Narbonne in southern France, and made her his Queen.

A short history indeed
Considering this was written towards the end of the 19th century it still does a fair job of refreshing what many of us, spaniards, learnt in school but have a blurry memory of at an older age. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special either...
Hard work!
You need to have a burning interest in this, to stay the course and plough on through a sea of muddled facts, and a turgid, confusing and endless successions of Spanish monarchs. Add to this the clumsy, dodgy English, which at times is almost unintelligible, and its reading becomes a chore.
