One summer night a couple expecting their second child make the fateful decision to let their nine-year-old daughter camp out in their garden shed. The little girl, Kría, vanishes that night, never to be seen again.

Nine years later, in the depths of winter, Kría's clothing is discovered in an old suitcase during a police raid and the cold case of her disappearance is thrust back into the spotlight. Detectives Karó and Týr are sent to the village of Stykkishólmur on the Icelandic west coast to inform her parents, only to stumble on the scene of a murder. Idunn the pathologist, summoned to join them, is simultaneously conducting a private inquiry of her own.

Meanwhile, a newly single mother of two, renting the flat once occupied by the ill-fated family, becomes dangerously captivated by the case, leading to dire consequences.
