INTRODUCTION Broilers can synthesize L-carnitine de novo via lysine and methionine metabolism. In addition, dietary meals derived from animal origin are higher in L-carnitine than those of vegetable meals. L-carnitine is essential in broiler metabolism as long chain fatty acid transport across the mitochondrial membrane is dependent on L-carnitine. In addition, L-carnitine promotes [beta]-oxidation of long chain fatty acids. Hence, broiler research concerned with L-carnitine typically assesses lipid metabolism and carcass composition.
