The iconic Dolly Parton celebrates her extraordinary life and shares precious pearls of wisdom from over sixty years in the spotlight.
If I had but one wish for you, it would be for you to dream more.
When I was a kid, I used to put a tin can on a broom handle. I used to stick it down in the crack out on the porch of our old cabin and, of course, in my mind’s eye I was standing on a stage with my guitar, singing my heart out into this microphone and those were not chickens out there in the yard. It was my audience. That was no ragged dress that I was wearing. It was a dress all aglitter with rhinestones and it was made of the finest silk in my mind. So you have to stay true to your heart and to your dreams. – Dolly Parton
Inspired by her graduation speech at the University of Tennessee, Dream More is Dolly Parton's personal philosophy for achieving success and making the world a better place. Drawing on childhood memories and her remarkable career as a beloved singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, Dolly shares her wisdom from growing up in the hills of East Tennessee to becoming a global icon.
Full of heart, Dream More is a celebration of an extraordinary life and an inspiring reminder to dream more, learn more, care more and be more.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Part memoir, part self-help, Parton's book shares her life philosophies and the guiding principles behind her Dollywood Foundation, which provides free books to children through the Imagination Library program. Her drive and propensity for "dreaming big" took her from a life of poverty in a small Tennessee mountain town, where she practiced singing to the chickens, to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and beyond. Parton's style is folksy and winsomely charming. Discussing how to handle the down times in life, she writes, "People always say, 'But you always look so happy.' Well, that's Bo-tox! Nobody's happy all the time." Parton (Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business) remembers struggling through classes in a one-room schoolhouse as a child, only to later return to her hometown as a successful performer and provide students with scholarships. Parton goes on to outline the practices that made her a successful businesswoman, notably taking commitment seriously and choosing the right people to commit to, and share her earnest sense of faith. Fans will particularly enjoy "The Wit & Wisdom of the Dolly-Mama," which contains Dolly-isms like "I'm just the girl next door, provided you live next door to an amusement park," and "Home is where I hang my hair."
