PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Love is in the crisp autumn air for a cheerleader and an athletic class clown in this quintessential romance from Harrison (Finding What's Real). Soccer player Jacob Reilly has been secretly in love with cheer captain Rory Graham since fifth grade. The only reason he hasn't made a move is because Rory's boyfriend, soccer captain Tucker Panagopoulos, is also Jacob's best friend. When one of the cheer squad's stunt performers is injured in an accident and sidelined from competing at the upcoming regionals competition, Tucker goads Jacob into trying out for the opening. To everyone's shock, Jacob makes a good impression and Rory offers him the spot. As training for regionals grows more intense, though, she starts to question Jacob's conflicting loyalty to the squad, especially when she learns that the competition is scheduled for the same day as an important, heavily scouted soccer game. Worse, every time she lands in Jacob's arms during a stunt, her secret crush on him grows. Frothy storytelling reliably hits all the familiar rom-com beats. Likeable characters and a charming small-town setting round out this cozy offering. The protagonists read as white. Ages 13–up.
