Heroes 2012

Each day on the battlefield brings the possibility for tragedy or victory, death or heroism. They are not mutually exclusive, and often a single instant produces them all. These themes run through the pages of the eighth edition of Stars and Stripes’ annual Heroes special section, available for the first time in an eBook format.

 

You’ll find the stories of dozens of American servicemembers whose actions have earned them medals for valor. You’ll find stories of heroes at home, those who have made it their duty to take care of returning servicemembers struggling with life after the military or the children whose parents never came home from war. In a letter to servicemembers, published inside, President Barack Obama tells them, “We are bound by a sacred trust to care for you and your families, and to preserve your legacy of bravery for generations to come.”
