Just So Stories

In „Just so stories” Kipling shows us a fantastic world with gods, jinns, magicians and wise animals, fancying various happenings which made some animals to look different than they originally used to.

Long time ago – Kipling imagines in his just so stories – the elephant, the leopard, the kangaroo, the rhinoceros, the camel and the crab looked different than today and the whale could eat not only big fishes but men too.  

The stories explain why and how these animals got some peculiarities, making them different from the others: how the elephant got his trump, why the camel has a hump and the leopard spots, why the kangaroo has long hind legs and the rhinoceros great folds in his skin, why the big whale eats so tiny food.

Kipling imagines in his funny and fanciful stories how the man tamed the dog, the horse and the cow and how the cat found his place in people house, why cats always catch mice and dogs are chasing cats, how the first letter was written and the alphabet was made.
