Publisher Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Meet the Marches! Louisa May Alcott’s classic introduces us to four unforgettable sisters: beautiful Meg, tomboyish Jo, delicate Beth, and Amy, the indulged youngest of the lot. With their father serving as a Union chaplain, the Marches help their devoted mother, Marmee, make ends meet as their fortunes dwindle. The book starts with the family performing a small act of kindness for a family even less fortunate than they are and expands from there, drawing us in as the March girls grow up-and experience joy, hardship, failure, heartbreak, success, and love.

Alcott’s novel draws from her own life story. She herself was one of four sisters who all struck out on different paths. Open the pages of >Little Women and fall into a world of innocence and generosity-one that you’ll want to return to again and again.

Mixed feelings

Little Women depicts throughout time the lives of the March family, especially the lives of the four sisters:

↠ Meg: the eldest with a fondness for luxury and wealth.
↠ Jo: “quick temper, sharp tongue and restless spirit”.
↠ Beth: “her father called her 'Little Miss Tranquility', and the name suited her excellently; for she seemed to live in a happy world of her own, only venturing out to meet the few whom she trusted and loved”.
↠ Amy: “considered “the flower of the family”, for at sixteen she has the air and bearing of a full-grown up woman - not beautiful, but possessed of that indescribable charm called grace”.

I have mixed feelings towards Little Women. I have definitely enjoyed the second part much more as the beginning is a mere description of their daily life and an introduction to their unique personalities. Therefore, I found it dull and even boring at times. It is not until the second half of the novel when more action takes place and the characters start to develop their own paths.

This turn of events along with the morals and feminism shown by Louisa May Alcott are certainly the highlights for me. Overall, it has been a pleasant read. However, I do not agree with certain love matches at the end😭 It was a bit weird witnessing the turn of events.

And by the way, I feel I’m sooo Jo March!!! She is the best character and I absolutely took delight in reading about her personality and her ambitions. So refreshing! She could have had a better ending, although I understand the author’s intentions.
