This story of two misfit ranch workers who dream of owning a small piece of land remains a heartbreakingly relevant exploration of American poverty. John Steinbeck’s writing is beautiful, painting a vivid picture of the golden hills around Salinas and giving us an intimate window into Lennie and George’s protective, oddball friendship. Even if you’ve read Of Mice and Men before, its ending lands like a gut punch. Steinbeck’s 1937 classic is a powerful little novel—simple enough to be accessible to younger readers, but packed with so much emotion and symbolism it will impact everyone.
