His father was executed in 1649 and until 1660 Charles lived in exile abroad until being restored to the English throne in 1660. He married but had no legitimate children, his brother turned catholic, the country suffered a sever outbreak of the plague and London was almost destroyed by fire. This was not an easy reign and most of it was diarised by Pepys.
