If twenty-year-old bartender William Pierce could kill anyone, it'd be himself. But having seen the damage his father Tony caused by doing just that when William was just thirteen, he chooses the next best option: a solitary life of self-loathing, coloured by bitter reflections on his mother's decline following Tony's death. Then William meets Sarah James, a homeless university dropout facing her own personal tragedy, and sees a chance to make reparations for Tony's betrayal.

With every misstep, William sets out to prove he is not his father. Driven by guilt at the role her inaction played in her sister's dark life, William's aunt Claire tries to persuade William his actions to save Sarah are driving her into a life without autonomy. Claire knows William can't run from blood. She knows how this story will end. But will he listen?
