This novel was written as a social commentary about society manners and customs during the Victorian Era in Paris, France. Written by Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer~Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton. He was an English novelist, poet, playwright and policitican, and incredibly popular, he wrote many bestselling novels, with which he earned a fortune. He coined the phrases: "the great unwashed"",pursuit of the almighty dollar", and the "the pen is mightier than the sword".
