This book is a visual and narrative history of two communities, Māori and Pākehā, during a hundred years of settlement in New Zealand. 


It reveals how the two cultures saw their history through very different eyes: for Pākehā, it was a story of establishing an ‘English island’ in the Pacific; for Māori, a tale of loss and exclusion. But by setting out these conflicting understandings of the past, the book seeks to bridge cultural differences through the sharing of knowledge.
