Freeman Wills Croft was an Irish writer, mostly known as the master of mystery and detective fiction. He began to write to amuse himself, but in the result the literary activity became the main occupation of his life. During the lifetime he created seven novels which are characterized by attention to the details of the investigation and was generally hailed as a masterpiece of pure detection.

“The Pit Prop Syndicate” is a detective novel, published in 1922. When Seymour Merriman stopped at the side of the road twenty-six miles outside Bordeaux, little did he know how his life was about to change.
