The Wrong Way Down

In the eleventh mystery featuring Henry Gamadge, the expert on old books and manuscripts is drawn into a puzzle centered on an impossibility. Miss Julia Paxton, tasked with closing up the historic Ashbury mansion, is alarmed when a framed etching that has hung in the hallway for years suddenly acquires a fresh inscription dated 1793. The mysterious writing appears shortly after a visit from a professional medium, Iris Vance, leading some to believe it is a message from the beyond. Skeptical of spiritualist explanations, Gamadge investigates the "miracle," only to find that the new inscription is a harbinger of very real danger. When the supernatural riddle turns into a case of murder, Gamadge must look past the ghost story to find a killer who is all too human.
