Descripción editorial

First published in the US in 1940, ''Why England Slept'' by future US President John F. Kennedy is a popular historical and accessible political science book which analyzes why the United Kingdom was unprepared for World War II and explores the systemic vulnerabilities that democratic nations face when confronted by totalitarian regimes.

The title is an intentional allusion to Winston Churchill's 1938 book which was published in the United States under the same name. While Churchill's book heavily blamed British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and specific political leaders for the policy of appeasement, Kennedy's thesis offered a broader perspective. Kennedy argued that Great Britain's unreadiness was not just the fault of a few leaders. Instead, it stemmed from deep-rooted issues where the general public and political parties did not understand the importance of a strong national defense.

In a highly uncommon stance for the time, Kennedy argued that if Britain had confronted Adolf Hitler earlier, it would have been catastrophic. He claimed the delay caused by appeasement actually gave the UK crucial time to build up its air defense forces. Kennedy used the British timeline as a mirror for the United States, warning that apathy and inaction left America equally vulnerable to fascist aggression.
