Museum as a gaming and digital learning environment

This book is about a pedagogical cooperation project ”Museum as a gaming and digital learning environment” which was carried out during 7.-25.9.2015. The Central Ostrobothnian Excellent! -project, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius and the Provincial Museum of Central Ostrobothnia were participants in the project.


The curriculum contents, objectives and evaluation criteria were selected from the following school subjects: history, math, art and Finnish language. In addition to this we looked at the extensive learning goals set in the new Finnish curriculum. This learning project was planned for the fifth and sixth graders.


We had a theme as a pedagogical frame: the King arrives in Kokkola in 1752. The milieu of the museum quarter was chosen as a learning environment because the team wanted to take the pupils to an authentic learning environment and it was possible for the Provincial Museum of Central Ostrobothnia to offer the authentic environment for this use. Apple iPads had a great role in this project as a learning tool and so we created an interesting mixture of new technology used in an old environment.


Planning and piloting the activities were: class teacher Tommi Nurmi from Hollihaka school, university teacher Sirkku Lähdesmäki, museum lecturer Lauri Skantsi, headteacher Pertti Kuosmanen and class teacher students Krista Valkama, Eeva-Liisa Linnanmäki, Riitta Raja-Aho, Anniina Pennanen, Merja Jylänki, Auri Lamberg and Anna-Kaisa Kuusento.
