Publisher Description

Introduction When a child enters a family by adoption, what might be the response of his or her 'new' grandparents? This is a question of great relevance to adopters and to those working with them. In the literature, however, the concepts of adoption and 'kinship' often appear as alternatives, with kinship and grandparenthood implying blood relationship. Grandparents' pride in the achievements of their grandchildren, and in the success of their own children as parents, is thought to be bound up with the genetic link which the grandparents see being continued (Erikson, 1994).
