"अरस्तु एक प्रसिद्ध यूनानी दार्शनिक तथा प्लेटो के शिष्य और सिकंदर के गुरु थे। उनका जन्म 384 ई.पू. एथेंस के ‘स्टेगीरस’ नामक गाँव में हुआ था। बचपन से ही अरस्तु को जीवन शास्‍‍त्र का कुछ ज्ञान विरासत में मिला। अरस्तु प्लेटो के राजनैतिक दर्शन को वैज्ञानिक रूप देनेवाले पहले शिष्य थे। हर्मियस की दूसरी बेटी पीथीयस से उनका विवाह हुआ।
अरस्तु ने अपोलो के मंदिर के पास एक विद्यापीठ की स्थापना की; जो कि ‘पर्यटक विद्यापीठ’ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ। अरस्तु का बाकी जीवन यहीं पर बीता। अपने महान् शिष्य सिकंदर की मृत्यु के बाद अरस्तु ने भी विष पीकर आत्महत्या कर ली।
रस्तु को दर्शन; राजनीति; काव्य; आचारशास्‍‍त्र; शरीर रचना; दवाइयों; ज्योतिष आदि का अच्छा ज्ञान था। उनके लिखे हुए ग्रंथों की संख्या 400 तक बताई जाती है। अरस्तु राज्य को सर्वाधिक अनिवार्य संस्था मानते थे। उनकी राज्य-संस्था कृत्रिम नहीं; बल्कि प्राकृतिक थी। इसे वह मनुष्य के शरीर का अंग मानते थे और इसी आधार पर मनुष्य को प्राकृतिक प्राणी कहते थे। अरस्तु ने अनेक रचनाएँ कीं; उनका दर्शन आज भी उच्च कक्षाओं में पढ़ाया जाता है।
