New England’s lesbian senior sleuths return in “this winning second entry in a thriller series you simply must try” (Library Journal).
Widows Lil Campbell and Ada Strauss are exploring their newfound romance when they are woken early by the sound of sirens. The local nursing home in their quaint Connecticut town is ablaze. Thankfully, the residents are safe and sound, including Ada’s mother. Administrative director Delia Preston, who appears to have jumped from the roof, isn’t so lucky. But when Delia’s death is ruled a homicide, suspicion spreads like wildfire that it was arson.
Compelled to investigate, Lil and Ada discover Delia’s ties to three of the wealthiest and most respected men in town—one of whom was just about to flee the country. But that’s just the first flicker of a clue. These three former local football heroes share a very dark past and they aren’t the only ones who want to keep it buried. As Lil and Ada get closer to the truth, the case gets hotter and more dangerous with every revealing hour.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
A devastating fire at the Nillewaug Village Assisted Living Community has repercussions both personal and professional for Lil Campbell and her best friend and now lover, Ada Strauss, in Atkins's pedestrian second mystery set in Grenville, Conn. (after 2012's Vultures at Twilight). The suspicious fire leaves five dead, including administrative director Delia Preston, and 600 homeless, including Ada's mother, Rose Rimmelman. On the plus side, Lil, who writes a column for the Litchfield Sentinel, sees a chance for a major news story. The story grows quickly when the medical examiner determines that Preston was killed before the fire, and Village CEO Jim Warren is arrested for fraud. Ada and Lil take in Rose as well as Alzheimer's patient Alice Sullivan, while Lil uncovers links to sordid secrets in Grenville's past as well as a cleverly concocted scam. A contrived ending may leave some readers unsatisfied.
