Publisher Description
In this spellbinding first novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews’s urban fantasy Hidden Legacy series, private detective Nevada Baylor navigates her way through an alternate world where dynasties, built on inherited wealth and magic, guide the course of humanity.
?Nevada Baylor runs a small-time detective agency in Houston, Texas, busting scammers, exposing cheaters, and dealing with petty criminals. She’s very good at her job—helped by a magical ability to sense when someone tells the truth or lies. But when she’s forced into accepting a case to find a radical pyrotechnic who can conjure heat and fire at will, Nevada knows she’s out of her league. To bring him to justice, she’ll have to join forces with someone who wields an even more dangerous power.
Connor “Mad” Rogan is a former combat mage, a telekinetic singularly responsible for mass destruction in war-torn countries, and a member of one of the most powerful magic families in the world. His nephew has been kidnapped by the fugitive pyromaniac, and Nevada is his best chance at finding them both. But unlike Nevada, Connor could care less about societal law and order, and has no qualms about extinguishing his family’s enemy.
Bound by their mission, Nevada and Connor clash over their tactics and moral beliefs, even as things undeniably heat up between them. But the man they’re chasing is involved in a darker conspiracy that threatens to destroy the city—and destabilize the balance of power the elite magical families use to influence every nation on Earth.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
This series start from popular author Andrews serves up a refreshing new magical society, excellent world-building, beguiling characters, and strong storytelling. The Osiris serum, discovered in 1863, activated latent human magical talents. In the novel's alternate present, families with strong magical lineage are now dynasties called Houses, and they rule the world. Nevada Baylor of Houston's Baylor Investigative Agency is from an ordinary family, meaning she has little magical talent and thus must rely on more mundane abilities to survive. Under contract to an influential House, she reluctantly accepts a mission that will make or break her family's company. Along the way, she tangles with Mad Rogan, an incredibly powerful scion who renounced his House. Fighting her attraction to Mad Rogan at every step, Nevada must capture the bad guy, unsnarl layers of deception, and come to terms with her own magical heritage if she is to survive. The pace and plot start slowly but soon quicken. Romantic sparks and a tangled mystery make this a lively, impressive series debut.
Customer Reviews
Burn for Me will burn in my fireplace tonight
I had read reviews regarding Burn for Me before purchasing the book. They all said it was fantastic, chocolate for the soul and so on, so I bought it. I read 2/3 of the book and I simply couldn’t read further. The storyline is worn out and naive. The main character is first described as someone sane and likable. Second chapter onwards she is described as simply dumb and unstable. Her main love interest is ludicrous, and frankly reading the ”hot” scenes between these characters made me cry a little. The relationship Andrews is building in this book is all about manipulation and both mental and physical abuse. This book is good, only if you look at it as a comment on the abusive relationships disguised as lustworthy in media today. But I doubt that was Andrews’ point.
