Growing up in Mobile Alabama, the southern Jewish experience has been a very special and influential part of Glen Mutchnick’s life. Through the lens of growing up Jewish in the Deep South, Mutchnick’s book, Everybody’s Got Tzuris, takes the reader on Mutchnick’s cancer journey. Tzuris is a Yiddish word meaning troubles, pain and difficulties. The reader follows the cancer narrative that uses photos and stories of the doctors, nurses, technicians, friends and family members to tell his story. Mutchnick pauses throughout the book to share his thoughts, observations insights and includes stories of other people dealing with Tzuris.

Everybody’s Got Tzuris includes answers, based on Mutchnick’s extensive research, to questions like: what insights do Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism offer us about the afterlife, death and dying? Is living forever possible? How do we heal from Tzuris? How do people find happiness? How do disasters bring people together? How do we turn pain into something purposeful? How do we stay sane in a sea of new challenges?

In Everybody’s Got Tzuris Mutchnick introduces the reader to innovative ways to understand unconventional concepts such as: contemplative care, assisted voluntary death, post war moral injury, and cyronics.

As a nationally recognized teacher of twenty five years, Mutchnick discusses his unique approach to pedagogy and how he helps his students deal with their Tzuris. In the book there are stories about his students and stories written by his students.

He uses anecdotes about his experiences that helped him and can help the reader deal with the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of cancer.

Ultimately, Mutchnick tackles the tough question: What lessons can be learned from dealing with Tzuris to make life worth living in a meaningful, optimistic and joyous way?
