Publisher Description

Jack, a deaf art student, who communicated by using sign language, was sitting for an art exam. The outcome of which could determine his future as an artist, since there was a bursary as well as a monetary prize at stake.
The exam instructions asked the students to interpret in picture form, what the poem written up on the blackboard had meant to them. Jack got the message clearly, but he still struggled to get started on the project. Then finally he decided to interpret the idea of sunlight by painting a group of Lombardy Poplars in shades of yellow and mustard with just a touch of orange on the left side of the page. The result was pleasing to the eye, but when he was now faced with interpreting shadows and darkness on the opposite side of the page, he could not decide how to tackle this.
Then with only fifteen minutes to go, the teacher jolted him into action by telling him that he had to at least paint something on the right of the page. With this, Jack dipped his brush into a bottle of black ink and carelessly swirled it across the other half of the page. The result was not pleasing, so he dabbed at it with a tissue. He noticed then that some interesting shadow-like tree shapes were emerging on the page, so he added more ink. But then disaster struck and he spilt the entire contents of the bottle of ink over his painting.
He cried out in distress when he saw the ink dripping off his painting. But then the art teacher told him it was salvageable and said she would mop up the ink spill, while he fixed his painting as best he could...
Once the painting was dry, to the teachers astonishment, she saw that the ink had dried into long narrow tree shapes, that were similar in form to the trees Jack had painted in shades of yellow. And this gave her some hope that this unusual result, might yet turn out to be something that was quite exceptional.
