Publisher Description

Shortly after Will Sumner purchased the Evansville Review from the Robert Antes family in 1950, Vera Wickersham asked him if she could contribute a cooking column for the weekly paper. Vera was a fantastic cook with unlimited energy and creative ideas. She continued the column until her husband sold their grocery story and they moved to Ft. Lauderdale. Carolyn Sumner continued Vera's Kate the Kook column with interviews of local women and their favorite recipes. The cookbook is made up of Vera's recipes and those of local women. The recipes are a wonderful picture of home cooking in the 1950s-no calorie counting, no concern about using uncooked eggs and many delicious party and holiday desserts. The section of pickle making is very interesting. I wonder how many women do that to-day.
