Lucifer was destroyed by God using a secret weapon- Light. Though blasted away in eternal fire, his presence could still be felt in the cosmos. Something God was trying to deal with along with taking care of the Humans. But even God needed some help. So he created Satan, a lighter and better version of Lucifer. At least that was what He thought.
