The story opens in Zimbabwe. Darling happens to be ten years old at the beginning of the novel. She finds it difficult to navigate a world of degradation and chaos with her friends. In the later part of the novel, she is a teenager in the Midwest United States.

In the United States, she joins an aunt who happens to be working in the United States. Darling hopes that a better future is about to unfold in front of her in the United States.

The book was nominated for the Man Booker Prize in 2013 and the Guardian First Book Award in the same year. The book was also shortlisted for a Barnes & Noble Discover Award Finalist in 2013.
