In this instalment of Mark Greaney’s Gray Man series, ex-CIA spy Courtland Gentry and his girlfriend, Zoya, are hiding out in Guatemala under assumed names. When a Russia-backed assassin flushes them out, they’re pulled into an international whirl of intrigue. Anton Hinton is an obscenely rich man who’s busy assembling a superweapon based on AI and robotics—and it just so happens that geniuses in those fields have been dying over the last few days. Gentry and Zoya were just trying to live their best lives, but now they’ve got to save the world from a maniac with too much money, dodging his deadly high-tech toys along the way. From the first page it’s action all the way, and Greaney’s got a gift for piling on the tension, punctuated with just the right touch of deadpan wit. Using the latest scientific developments to throw some near-future worries into the mix, The Chaos Agent is a thriller to savour.

Greaney's formulaic 13th outing for former CIA agent Courtland "Gray Man" Gentry (after Burner) finds the ex-spy lying low in Guatemala when he learns a ruthless contract killer is on his trail. As Greaney soon discovers, the assassin has been hired by criminal mastermind Cyrus to eliminate key military figures conducting research on weaponized AI so he can harness the software for his own nefarious ends. The chilling central question of who will win the race to integrate AI and weapons of mass destruction is the best feature of a novel that otherwise reads like subpar Tom Clancy or the hasty novelization of a CGI-heavy streaming series. While Greaney's fans will get what they came for—nonstop action and long, fetishistic descriptions of weapons including rifle-mounted robot dogs—the plot feels slapdash and contrived. This military thriller is mediocre at best.
