The only known rule of mirage magic is that the wielder must be both first and best convinced of the truth behind their illusions. Any rational person is unable to accomplish such a trick, leaving scholars to dub this form of magic out of reach for all but the most abominably insane.

Satik is the world's most accomplished wielder of mirage magic. He is, also, an indentured servant working for a local salt harvester. When a high-ranking daicha brings him into her court to ask for his assistance in catching an assassin, she receives more than she bargained for.
