300 English Preposition Patterns

Most preposition books are organised by preposition. That is the wrong way round, because you never start from the preposition. You start from the word in front of it.

Nobody sits down wondering what "on" means. What stops you mid-sentence is "depend", and whether it takes on, of or from. So this book is organised the way the problem actually arrives: by the adjective, verb or noun that chooses the preposition.

300 patterns in 25 units of twelve, in five parts: adjectives (afraid of, good at, similar to), verbs (insist on, rely on, result from), nouns (reason for, increase in, solution to), fixed phrases (in charge of, on behalf of, beyond repair), and time, place and movement - with the full at / on / in system explained as point, line and enclosure.

And the unit nobody else includes: the verbs that take no preposition at all. Discuss, enter, marry, phone, answer, approach, resemble, lack, join, reach, affect. Every one is regularly given a preposition it does not want.

Every pattern gets a plain-English meaning, four example sentences, a usage note covering the other prepositions the same word can take, and the wrong preposition shown and corrected.

Each unit ends with a twelve-question test - 300 in all - with a full answer key and an A-Z index at the back.
