[br][br]Eben L. Hill was born in a log cabin in Huron Township, Wayne County, N.Y., on Dec. 24, 1843. After Abraham Lincoln's call for 75,000 men, Hill joined Company B, 27th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in May 1861. He was 17. In July, his regiment fought in the first major land battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run, but Hill slept through most of it. Soon after, he was sent to the regimental surgeon and was told he had one "deficient" lung and was discharged Aug. 13, 1861.
