INTRODUCTION Innovation provides significant benefits to a firm, including additional revenues, improved processes (Khazanchi, Lewis and Boyer 2007) and ultimately, competitive advantage (McGrath and Ming-Hone 1996). Numerous works have suggested that logistics service providers (LSPs) may not be particularly innovative (Ackerman 1996; Peters, Lieb and Randall 1998; Wilding and Juriado 2004; Wagner 2008; Wallenburg 2009). Their lack of innovation performance has not yet been explained. There is, hence, a research gap: "[L]ogistics research has largely ignored the concept of innovation" (Flint, Larsson, Gammelgaard and Mentzer 2005, p. 113).
