Description de l’éditeur
A debutante, a disgraced lord, and a dead body. A disaster... or the grimmest meet-cute in Regency London?
Miss Delilah Bancroft has a problem. A sizable and rather bloody one. Namely, a dead man on the library floor. She’d only wished for a moment of solitude out of the glaring eyes of Society. Instead, she’s caught red-handed (unfortunately, literally) by an attractive stranger. Is he her salvation or ruination?
Marcus, Lord Wyndam has inherited a decrepit castle and a tainted title. During his desperate search for evidence to silence whispers of treason against his father, he stumbles across a woman holding a deadly stiletto over a body. Is she murderer or pawn? What he knows for sure is that she is his only link to the truth. With enemies beating down the door, he spirits her from the scene before she is discovered with blood on her hands—and her pretty white debutante dress—to unearth her part in the grisly plot.
Delilah proves herself to be a woman of wit and courage as well as beauty, and as the only person who might be able to identify the man behind the plot that ruined his father, Marcus must keep her close. Even if he has to ruin her to do it.
Warning: Contains a lady who longs for adventure, a man of honor who longs for respectability, and a head long rush through London’s ballrooms on the hunt for both. Will they live to love another day?
Avis d’utilisateurs
A lovely tale with intrigues
When everything looks grim around her, will going out her comfort zone leads her to disaster or happiness...
I am a historical romance reader but strangely my first read by Mrs Laura Trentham was a contemporary from her Highland, Georgia series.
And while I liked enough this previous book, I just fell in love with this one. It has everything I love in a historical romance, a miss able to think despite the circumstances, a hero clever and kind not too much on the alpha side, a mystery and good side characters.
Delilah has become the demure miss her mother pressed her to be, so much she lost all her wits and puns to only appear as a pawn in her mother’s scheme for a grander future. Until she jumps right in a Clue game, with her life at stake.
At the beginning, I feared she would swoon or lost her wits, and while she at time took a bit too long to decide if she should trust Marcus or not, she finally chooses the right path.
I loved to see her grow and reawaken her old self, the one more daring and lively. She is a heroine as I like them, not perfect, with her own doubts and misconceptions but with Marcus, she reveals herself and flourishes.
Marcus is a kind man, not the alpha type “you Jane, me Tarzan”. He supports Delilah and cheers when she stands for herself. Despite the title he inherited, he was never raised to become a peer, why he has other dreams and does not really miss his family wealth. But he can’t stand to have his name dishonored.
Why his quest for the truth, with the hope to restore his family name and give his dreams a grip for his future.
I loved they were far from perfect, failable. Mrs Laura Trentham paints them with insecurities, hopes, flaws but a heart bigger than them. Their interactions moved from fun to sweet then scorching hot while they deepened their bound and get to learn to know one another.
This 5 stars read will charm and enchant any romance lover.
I was granted an advance copy by the author and purchased my own.
