An English writer settled in Paris is called home to be executor of a will and finds himself entangled with the two women it concerns. Lucas Malet was Charles Kingsley's daughter and wrote frankly enough about sex and money to be dropped from the circulating libraries at the height of her fame. This edition includes 59 plates of painting bound with the text, among them works by Jean Béraud, Walter Sickert, Eugène Delacroix and Théodore Géricault, dating from 1829 to 1920.
