Nicola is a war hero, but one would never know it from the way the Austin mage society treats her. Of course, she also spent five years running around Austin "collecting" magical artifacts from the rich mage elite. Those crimes eventually landed her in prison, where she was content to live out her life if it meant that people weren't afraid of her.


When Nicola Casimir's old military mentor comes to visit with an ultimatum that her conscience can't take, she turns to the only man she knows that can't be bought or coerced: the federal agent who pursued and arrested her.
