INTRODUCTION India, the largest country in which polio is endemic, accounts for over 50% of the cases of poliomyelitis reported globally (1). If the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is to succeed, progress in India is critical. The Government of India launched the Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) campaign with the first National Immunization Day (NID) observed in December 1995 (2). Since then, a drastic reduction in the number of polio cases has been observed in the country. The strategy of conducting successive rounds of NIDs and sub-NIDs over the years has brought India close to achieving elimination of polio.
