He's assigned to play against a female member of the club, who has bet herself against $500 worth of chips.

The female member plays an emotional game.
The problem with playing an emotional game is that there's an item called a doubling cube that's used in backgammon. A player can double the player's opponent and play the game for two times, four times, eight times or whatever the original bet. The club limit for an original bet is $100.
If the female member wins, she can wind up money ahead, with the thrill of knowing what she risked. If the female member winds up money behind, she pays off the chip draw on her back, maybe several times.
