Cancer biomarkers are firmly embedded clinically as essential diagnostic modalities to assess cancer. Human chorionic gonadotropin and a-fetoprotein for germ cell tumors, monoclonal serum and urine electrophoretic peaks for myeloma, and prostate-specific antigen for prostate cancer represent only a few of the successful cancer biomarkers now used clinically.
