Henry David Thoreau was an American writer, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, essayist, and poet. A leading transcendentalist, he believed in social equality, spiritual self-improvement, closeness to nature and freedom from material interests.

“Canoeing in the wilderness” is an essay, first published in 1916. Thoreau was an early advocate of recreational hiking and canoeing, of conserving natural resources on private land, and of preserving wilderness as public land. The chief attraction that inspired Thoreau to make the trip was the primitiveness of the region. Here was a vast tract of almost virgin woodland, peopled only with a few loggers and pioneer farmers, Indians, and wild animals. The present volume dedicated to the author's notes.
