Carl the Carp

This story talks about the destructive nature of the European Carp on Australian rivers. Carl and his Carp family are messing up the river and becoming a real pest for the native fish as well as the humans that use the river. The community come together to take action and decide to run a Carp fishing competition, or Carp Muster, to get rid of this feral fish.


In 2015, the Feral Animals Enviro-Stories program provided kids from central New South Wales, Australia, with the opportunity to write and illustrate stories about feral animals and their impacts on both biodiversity and agriculture. Schools were supported by technical staff from local organisations to help them learn about their feral animals. This project has resulted in ten books being published, printed and distributed as well as interactive books developed. This book was prepared by a student from St. Laurence’s School in Forbes with support from Central West Local Land Services and Invasive Animals CRC.
