Description de l’éditeur

Chess Fundamentals is a lucid and systematic exposition of the principles underlying sound play, moving from elementary mates and endgames to pawn structure, piece coordination, planning, and illustrative complete games. Its prose is spare, authoritative, and pedagogical, reflecting the classical chess tradition in which clarity, economy, and positional logic are valued above ornament. Written in the early twentieth century, it stands beside the great instructional works of the period as a bridge between beginner's manuals and mature strategic treatises. José Raúl Capablanca, world chess champion from 1921 to 1927, was celebrated for an almost effortless natural talent, exceptional endgame technique, and a crystalline sense of position. His Cuban background, meteoric rise, and practical dominance over elite competition shaped a teaching philosophy grounded not in abstract complication but in the discovery of simple, correct moves. The book distills the habits of mind that made his play appear inevitable. This volume is recommended to readers who want more than openings or tricks: it offers a durable education in chess judgment. Beginners will find firm foundations, while stronger players will recognize enduring lessons in simplicity, precision, and strategic restraint.
