Byline: Tughral Yamin September 11, 2001 has been etched in collective human memory as the date, when the symbols of American economy, military might and democracy were attacked. For the Americans this became the causus belli to launch the Global War on Terror (GWOT) - an international campaign to track down and bring to book the non-state actors involved in the attacks. The American expeditionary forces first invaded Afghanistan and then turned their attention to Iraq. They are now back in Afghanistan in a last gasp 'surge operation' before the eventual drawdown. This has been America's longest war in contemporary history and the results have not exactly matched the stated objectives. On December 13, 2001, three months after the 9/11 attacks in the US, there was an abortive terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament House. Indians decided to replicate the American example. The attack on the Parliament House was declared as an assault on the icon of Indian democracy.
