Beautiful and clever Adele Westbrook grows up in one of Cornwall, England's finest homes, only to become an enigma to her family and friends. Weary of people who can't understand her unconventional ways and odd perspectives, she ultimately abandons thoughts of marriage and children, finding solace in her own private world. 

Content with her unique, if non-traditional life, Adele is caught off guard when fate brings a mysterious visitor to her father's home. In one dramatic moment, she recognizes a kindred spirit in Andrew Sheffield, the Earl of Ashbourne, but quickly realizes he is not what he seems. A renowned Jacobite leader, Andrew is there to discover if the Westbrooks are loyal to King George or secret supporters of the exiled James Stuart.

As religious and political conflicts rage through England, unsettling rumors about Andrew's past reach Adele's ears, and she learns that his life is shrouded in secrets as dark and dangerous as the Jacobites themselves. Refusing to give him up, she pushes the rumors from her mind, and the two pledge their lives to each other. Andrew leaves England then, to eventually fight in the infamous Battle of Culloden. Back in Cornwall, Adele faces sudden danger at the hands of an unknown, sadistic foe, and potential accusations of treason. She must draw on her extraordinary inner strength to overcome one challenge after another while fervently praying for Andrew's safe return.
