Lord Arthur Ffinch-Mayberry admits that he's on to a pretty cushy number - Lord of the Manor; a beautiful and resourceful wife; surrounded by serfs and freemen ready to provide for all his other earthly needs. What more could a twelfth century nobleman wish for?

So what on earth has possessed him to chuck it all in and hand the whole shooting match over to Ffinch-Mayberry's citizenry, many of whom are none too keen on the idea themselves? As Lord Arthur's utopian schemes progress, it becomes ever clearer that his ideas are truly well before their time, and his first faltering steps in social engineering leave everyone bemused, from the Duke of Norfolk right down to the village's daftest inhabitants.
