Description de l’éditeur
INTRODUCTION Hypothyroidism is a syndrome resulting from deficiency of thyroid hormones namely thyroxine ([T.sub.4]) and tri-iodothyronine ([T.sub.3]). Patients having elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and low [T.sub.3] and [T.sub.4] values than normal have overt hypothyroidism (OH), and those with elevated TSH level but normal [T.sub.3] and [T.sub.4] hormone levels have subclinical hypothyroidism (SH). Overt hypothyroidism is diagnosed when serum concentration of TSH is at or above 10 m[micro]/litre with a low serum thyroxine ([T.sub.4]) level, while patients with TSH levels between 4 and 10 m[micro]/litre and serum tri-iodothyronine ([T.sub.3]) and [T.sub.4] within normal population-based reference range are defined as having mild or subclinical hypothyroidism.
